Panic locks are special security locks that enable doors to be unlocked quickly and easily in emergency situations to provide people with a quick escape route.
Escape door locks, also known as panic locks, are indispensable security elements in buildings, especially in public and commercial facilities where the protection of people is a top priority. These special locks are designed to enable a quick and smooth evacuation in panic situations. They are used on wooden and steel doors as well as fire protection closures and offer various functions to meet different requirements.
There are different types of panic locks with different functions, which can be selected depending on the requirements and area of application:
In function B, the outer door handle is in neutral, causing the lock latch to lock the door in the strike plate and retract its bolt. This prevents access from the outside without a key. However, it is possible to switch between idle and open function on the lock. After this switchover, the door can also be accessed from the outside without a key, provided this has been set accordingly.
The panic lock with function B is particularly suitable for corridor doors in administration and office buildings as well as for side entrances.
In contrast to function B, no switching is possible with function C. The outer door handle is continuously in idle mode, which means that access from the outside is only possible with the key inserted. This is why this function is called forced locking, as the door can only be unlocked from the outside if the key is inserted. It is only possible to remove the key again once the door has been relocked.
The panic lock with function C is ideal for corridor doors in administrative and office buildings as well as for side entrances that are not used frequently. This function offers an additional security measure for less frequented doors.
In function D, the outer door handle is continuously connected, which means that the opening function is permanently active. The door is only held by its lock latch and can therefore be opened from the outside at any time. This is of particular importance if, for example, the fire department or rescue services need quick access to the building in an emergency. The panic release remains active as long as the door is deliberately locked.
The panic lock with function D is particularly suitable for doors that are rarely used, corridor doors in administrative and office buildings and for side entrances. This function facilitates quick access in emergencies or for emergency services.
Only panic function E is available for retractable fittings. This ensures that the door is never freely accessible from the outside. There is therefore no lever handle on the outside, but a knob or bar, for example. The door can only be opened with the corresponding key (or another locking medium).
The panic lock with function E is suitable if the group of people is clearly defined, for example in underground garages, boiler rooms, the entrance to commercial premises or front doors.
The deadbolt function ensures that exit is guaranteed at all times in an emergency, as the door can be unlocked and opened by simply pressing the inside handle. This allows people inside the room to escape quickly and without any obstacles. In contrast, access from the outside is only possible mechanically with the panic bolt function P using a key. To open the door from the outside, the deadbolt must be locked back with the key. This prevents unauthorized access from the outside, while at the same time enabling rapid evacuation from the inside.
The panic lock with function P is suitable for transformer stations and boiler rooms, elevator systems and underground garages.
Panic locks are designed to be opened easily and quickly, even by people without special training. This is crucial to ensure the safety of people in emergency situations. Many panic locks also meet the requirements for fire doors, helping to ensure compliance with safety and fire regulations.
